It has been a few years since I bought my first Frenchie. I remember back to those days when I spent many hours online looking for the pros and cons of french bulldogs. I had to dig through a lot of different forums and blogs to try and find the answers I was looking for.

Luckily for you guys, I have compiled a small, but informative list of what I think are the most important French bulldog pros and cons.
Pros

Firstly the pros (BTW, these far outway the cons)
Personality
The main reason I wanted a Frenchie, was because of their unique personality.
They are very loving dogs that show their affection whenever they get an opportunity. I have had a few dogs in my life that have not shown anywhere near the love and affection that my Frenchies show.
They also love to play!
Companionship
Because Frenchies don’t like to be alone, they will follow you everywhere, which in my eyes, make for a great companion.
I would highly recommend one of these dogs if you are either lonely or in need of a support dog
Intelligence
They are not most intelligent of dog breeds, but they do rank quite high up in the list and are the smartest of all the other bulldog breeds.
They can easily learn new tricks and can pick up on vocal commands and names.
Great with children
Before I had kids, I had dogs. So when I first brought my son home from the hospital, I was a little apprehensive of what my dog was going to be like.
Luckily, my cute canine companion took to the new arrival very well and was very excited to meet him.
After asking on a few forums if this was the case with other Frenchie owning parents, it would seem as though this breed of dog is perfect to have if you have kids.
Grooming
As they have very short coats, Frenchies are very easy to groom.
They do shed a lot though, so it would be wise to purchase something to de-shed them
They rarely bark

If you live in an apartment, then you will love this.
French Bulldogs only really bark when they need to (but sometimes, not even then)
Good with other pets
Frenchies love to be loved. Whether that love comes from a human or another animal.
If you already have another pet, whether it be another dog or cat, you can be sure that your bull will love it and want to play together.
Just make sure that the other pet will want to play nice first though.
Low exercise needs
As they are only small dogs, they only need a little exercise.
If you don’t like the idea of having to take your dog for a 10-mile hike every day just to cater to its exercise needs, then this dog is the perfect match for you.
Cons
Potential health problems
Even though I have not ranked this list in an order of importance, I thought I should put this one at the top as it is, in my eyes, one of the biggest flaws.
French Bulldogs have many health problems that can include:
- Various allergies
- Brachycephalic syndrome (due to their short noses)
- Hip Dysplasia
- Cherry Eye
- Overheating
Plus many others
Price

Frenchies are so expensive.
If you are looking to buy a French Bulldog pup, then you can expect to pay between $1000-3000
The price can be even higher than that if you are looking for one with a rare breeding history.
Prices for these outstanding breeds can reach up to $10,000 per pup!
Shedding
Even though they are small, you will not believe how much hair they shed.
It is advisable to give them a bath at least once a week and buy a de-shedding tool to use on them quite often.
As they are not hypoallergenic, you should take care if you suffer from any allergies.
Noises
The one thing that most Frenchie owners will tell you is that there will never be a silent moment in your house as long as the dogs around.
Due to smushed faces and breathing difficulties, they will often snore snort and wheeze.
They are also very flatulent dogs, so prepare for all the noises and smells that come with that.
Conclusion
Those are the pros and cons that I believe are the main factors when buying a French Bulldog.
As you can see, the pros far outway the cons on my list. If they didn’t, then I very much doubt that they would be one of the most popular dog breeds to own.
Would I recommend that you get one? Hell yeah (I wouldn’t dedicate a whole blog to them if I didn’t love them)
They are funny, interesting dogs that I am sure you will love too.
Thanks for taking the time to read this list. I have put in a lot of research and knowledge of my own to create this post.
